SCHOOL EXTENSION PROGRAM

School Extension programs

Classroom teachers are responsible for ensuring all students meet their full potential. Students are extended beyond age level curriculum, where they have met the full requirements of their year level. There are also additional extension programs that we are putting in place outside of the classroom.

These programs aim to challenge and extend K-6 students’ knowledge and skills in their areas of strength. The programs also aim to develop students’ employment skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, initiative and enterprise, organisation, resilience and critical thinking.

In 2024, there will be a number of programs running each term, for students in different year levels.  Each program will;

  • Have an entry/selection requirement or process.
  • Require students to miss one hour of class instruction, which they will need to catch up on any missed work as required by the teacher.
  • Have a homework commitment.
  • Have a celebration or communication at the end of the program.
  • Run for a term OR a semester

In term 1, the programs will be;

  • Public speaking extension for year 5 and 6 students
  • Maths extension for year 2 to 6 students

In term 2, the programs will be;

  • Public speaking extension for year 5 and 6 students
  • Maths extension for year 2 to 6 students
  • Science extension for year 2, 5 and 6 students

Mathematics extension program

Year 2-6 students who received an A for Maths Number and Algebra and scored in the top 25th percentile on their most recent PAT maths test,  will be invited to join the maths extension program.

These students will attend a one hour extension lesson each week, with a focus on collaborative problem solving, mathematics competitions and Numero challenges.

From these extension groups, we will select a team of four students (across years 3 to 6) to participate in the Have Sum Fun online competition. This is an interactive maths quiz and students need to utilise both their problem solving skills and team work. In 2024, this competition will take place;

  • Term 2 – 3 to 21 June
  • Term 3 – 75 to 23 August
  • Term 4 – 21 October to 8 November

Numero Challenges

As part of the extension program, students will build their mathematical skills cand hallenge each other in a game of Numero.

Whilst some classroom teachers also utilise Numero to build mathematical thinking and skills, the purpose of Numero extension is to have our most able maths students push each other in their thinking.

In 2024, our students will also have the opportunity to be selected for our school Numero Team as we compete in the AFG Primary Interschool Numero Challenge. Ms Tyneil White will be leading this team.

Public Speaking Extension Program

Our drama, Mrs Walton, leads the Public Speaking extension program.

Year 5/6 students also have the opportunity to be chosen from this group to represent our school in the Jandakot Electotrate public speaking competition and the Speak Up Awards.

SCIENCE EXTENSION PROGRAM

We will be offering a Science Extension Program in term 2 and 3, for interested year 2, 5 and 6 students.  Part of this program will be completing a submission into the SSTAWA Science Talent Search Competition.

Forms are due back to the front office by Wednesday, 20 March.   You can also download the forms here;
