PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Health and Physical Education

In the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area, students learn about being healthy, safe, and active. They develop skills to live a healthy life. The HPE learning area is in two parts:

  • Personal, social and community health (Health education)
  • Movement and physical activity (Physical education)

Health Education

Health Education is taught mostly by classroom teachers, except in Kindergarten and Pre-Primary where it is taught by a specialist teacher. There is a strong focus on health eating, road safety and being SunSmart.

Health Education alsoincludes learning about Protective Behaviours. All teachers in Western Australia must implement protective behaviours education that aligns with the Western Australian Curriculum across all phases of schooling. This teaches studentsa range of skills and strategies to help prevent and reduce child abuse and violence in the community.

Physical Education

At Piara Waters Primary School, Physical Education is taught by specialist Physical Education Teachers from Pre-Primary to Year 6.

For students in junior primary, we will be learning a range of different fundamental movement skills and applying these skills in simple games and activities. For students in middle and senior primary we will be developing specialised movement skills in a range of contexts which will allow us to further enhance our tactics and strategies in game situations. We encourage all students to practise the skills they learn in PE lessons at home on a regular basis and encourage all students to join local sporting clubs to further develop their mastery of the skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.

  • In Pre-Primary, students have a one hour dedicated Physical Education Lesson each week. All Pre-Primary children also participate in a combined Fundamental Movement Skills session led by classroom and specialist Physical Education teachers.
  • In Year 1 and 2, students have a one hour dedicated Physical Education Lesson each week.
  • In Year 3 to 6, students have a one hour dedicated Physical Education Lesson each week. They also participate in a combined “sport” session with other students in their year level for an hour a week. This session allows them to put the skills learnt into practice in modified games and sports.

Physical Education Lessons

  • Students are to please wear sports shoes/ runners, a hat and bring a drink bottle to all PE lessons.
  • Students can wear their faction shirts on the days they have PE lessons and on carnival days.
  • Sunscreen will be provided to students to use in PE lessons, it is their responsibility to apply when necessary.
